FREE SKATE at Shale Lake

CURRENT CONDITION (Updated Daily at 9:30 a.m.)
LAST DRILL DATE: Feb 1st 2009
RESULTS: We had 6 days of Free Skate but it is melting now. Sorry!
When conditions allow, Shale Lake will be opened to the public for ice skating. Before Skating is allowed there must be a minimum of four inches of solid ice. Ice depth is checked by drilling holes through the ice at several locations beginning from the shoreline and working toward the center. The ice is only checked once a day. Users should be aware that ice that was determined safe one day, may not be safe the next. Please check above for the current condition of the ice.
When conditions are "okay to skate" the gate at the entrance to Shale Lake will be open from 10:00 a.m. to dusk. EVERYONE who enters Shale Lake to participate must sign a risk wavier form. There is ABSOULTELY NO PARKING ON THE GRASS. All vehicles must be parked in the parking lots AND Ice Fishing is ONLY PERMITTED by Members of the Lake.
Note: Never skate alone and do not gather in large groups on the ice in one spot. Do not skate after dark and please warn others of dangerous conditions. Hypothermia, the rapid cooling of a person's body, can result in death. When it comes to ice, please remember...there is no SAFE ICE! Emergency rope and pole are available at the pavilion. Skating near the shoreline is safer than in the center of the lake where the water is deeper.
- If "Ice is Safe to Skate": The gate will be open from 10:00 a.m. to dusk. You need to bring your own ice skates and dress warmly. There are no indoor areas at the lake. Drive past the barn to the OFFICE and sign a wavier form located on the table outside. Park in one of the designated areas and have fun! Please follow the rules so it's safe for everyone and we can continue to offer FREE SKATE.
- If the condition above is "Ice is NOT Safe"...check again tomorrow after 9:30 a.m. Many factors affect ice quality; variable freezing, wind-whipped water, water movement and snow cover. (The Lake doesn't usually freeze unless we have had consistent below freezing temps for at least 5 days in a row). The gate will be locked and the Lake will be closed to all non-members.
